Ray Whitley

Robert Ray Whitley started his first band age 14 and was soon spotted by Producer Felton Jarvis and introduced to Bill Lowery and given work as a staff songwriter for his company Lowery Music Publishers of Atlanta, Georgia.

In the 60’s Ray Whitley became an internationally known singer, producer, arranger and songwriter. He has written over 147 songs, (sadly I suspect that some have been mixed up with the actor/singer of the same name,) as shown in his BMI songwriters folder, many became hits for The Tams, Guy Darrell, Brian Hyland, December’s Children and more recently, Sonia Evans.

Here’s a Ray Whitley quote from a January 2011 news article.

“I was sitting in his (Lowery’s) office and the Tams walked up to me and asked if I had any songs,” Whitley recalled recently. “I took them down to the boiler room and sang for them ‘What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am?'”

“I guess they liked it,” Whitley said. What made the connection even more unusual, considering that it was the early 1960s in the Deep South, is that the Tams are an all-black group and Whitley is white.

“But that never was a problem,” Whitley says.

But at the end of his life he lived as a homeless man on the streets. Choosing to sleep on the concrete floor of a shelter for the homeless at ‘Good News at Noon’, 979 Davis Street, Gainesville, Georgia 30501. He had lost much of his hearing and was trying to overcome a problem with alcohol.

Ray passed away aged 69 on Sunday, May 5, 2013, in Gainesville, Georgia, USA.

But his wonderful music lives on…

Rest In Peace, Ray Whitley.

Here is a lovely post from his school friend, Bobby Tony

  1. Great website tribute. I am the high school friend of Ray’s that posted in the link at end of home page. Ray was talented beyond his years as a young man and his music will live on. Thanks for starting this website with links to many of his songs and covers by others. The Tams will always be my favorite cover of Ray’s songs but the range of people who have recorded his compositions is wide.

  2. My band recorded one of Ray’s songs with him as our producer in the 1960’s at “The old schoolhouse” in North Atlanta. I liked him instantly and am so sorry I didn’t renew my acquaintance with him while he was still living.

  3. My first date with my wife of 48 years was to the Bistro to see Ray Whitley. He was playing to SRO crowds there. We saw him at the Bistro many times in 1969 and 1970. Then he had his problem. The next time I saw him was at a friends apartment in Smyrna in 1975. He played my guitar that night and I have to admit it was the best my axe ever sounded. He borrowed my guitar for a gig at a club on W. Ptree, can’t remember the name. The only people there were me, my wife, the bartender and Ray. Still he got up and played for an hour. That was the last time I saw him. What a singer, songwriter and guitar player. Many a big star wasn’t nearly as good. RIP.

  4. Good music see’s no color. It is a shame that his life took a left turn. I do like some beach music but in spells. It just blew my mind that Ray co-wrote one of my favorite Tam songs with James Cobb. Be Young,Be Foolish,Be Happy. I just listened to Brit Sonia Evans Cover and it is good too. It may be the musical arrangement of this song but It just makes my total being uplifted.

  5. I was just thinking about Ray, did a search and found this. I was in a folk group back in the 60’s called the Lagermen. We shared the stage many nights with Ray at the Bistro. I was saddened to see how he ended up. Talented guy. We would often go see Ray even when we weren’t playing. He asked us to work up an arrangement of his song “Here Today, Gone Tomorrow”. Always loved playing it.

  6. I just heard a Ray Whitley song ‘1983’ that he wrote & recorded in 1968. It is incredible and I can’t stop playing over & over. It’s very 1968 but still stands the test of time incredibly well. If my one knows any details about this song please send me an email. Thx

    • I’ve also been looking for years for this song on YouTube to add to the site and I’ve never actually heard it. If you have the mp3 file I could put it on YT and help complete his collection. Thank you.

      • I’ve noticed it’s absence on YouTube. I’ll try to send. I actually found a great Australian Ray Whitley CD Comp w 1983 on it. It was cheap & great quality.

      • I tried to send the mp3 of 1983- I’m not techno savvy- I got a great Australian cd compilation of about 30 of Ray’s songs- found on eBay. Check it out. Take care.

  7. I am Ray Whitley’s daughter in law, married to Christopher his son. There’s not a day he isn’t missed by his son. I wanted to see if anyone could put me in the direction to get some of his sheet music. I would like to surprise Christopher with this. Christopher has Rays old guitar and would love to display his sheet music with the guitar in our home. Thanks in advance- Christine.

    • Hello Christine, what a pleasure to be able to write to you after all this time setting up this tribute site for Ray. Being in the UK it’s difficult to find any information about Ray and his story.

I wonder if you and Christopher are ok with filling in some blanks about the past events of Rays personal life as it is a big mystery for me and his fans. I would love to help you find some original sheet music for Christopher, but I doubt it would be here in the UK.

Perhaps a few photographs of Christopher and his guitar may help, if I am allowed to put them on this site. I’m sure the universe will work it’s magic in your favour.

Christine, I can’t tell you how happy I am to make contact with you, I’m just sorry I didn’t see your comment earlier. Thank you so much, Tim.

      • Hello, if I could get in contact with through email I will be happy to provide some of Ray’s guitar photos. I know that he worked with Bill Lowry music production and they may have had some of his sheet music, but I am unable to reach them. As to Rays personal life he has one sister, Jane who is still living and she’s a real delight to be around. Christopher has 2 adult daughters from his first marriage, Cydney and Caitlyn. Cydney is married now and has a daughter, Claire. Christopher and I are raising my daughter, Ainsleigh. Ray was married to Christopher mother Hildegard who has since passed away in 2021. I never got to meet Ray, but to hear Chris talk about his father and to see all the work he has done. I know he was truly an amazing and talented artist.

  8. Very nice words being said about Mr. Whitley, a lot of research was done I can see. Interesting to know about his music and how he struggled in life- yet nothing is mentioned about his family life. Only mentioning if he had one son and his parents, nothing further about his siblings, his wife and his life as a dad. I wonder why?

    • Yes I understand that there are huge holes in Rays story. And I would love to fill in the gaps, ideally with a filmed documentary about his music and his life told by his friends , family and music fans.

Unfortunately I’m in the UK and the story takes place thousands of miles away in Georgia. But I have put together what information I can glean from the internet, which is very little and even less about his private life and the story of his demise. There is I believe, a sad and tragic incident which is the reason behind it all… But at least on Wikipedia, I managed to separate the two Ray Whitley characters with their similar identities. Especially for Ray being over shadowed by the Country & Western singing and acting cowboy of the 50’s. I do hope he approves of my efforts in lifting his profile as a very talented song writer and singer which helped shape my youth and I’m sure thousands of others.

  9. I’m a singer-songwriter living in Virginia and last night at an open mic I did 3 songs of Ray’s: Making Music Momma, What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am, and I Feel a Hitchhike Comin’ On.
